Heritage at heart

A Queen Anne style home steeped in history

A characterful Grade II listed townhouse in Bloomsbury is on sale with Dexters for £2.25 million. Situated on Lambs Conduit Street, a partly pedestrianised stretch of London’s West End, the property has deep historical roots and boasts four floors, four bedrooms and a grand reception room packed with charm.

Built in 1711, the Queen Anne style home has been lovingly restored and cared for over the decades, maintaining many of its original features. Entry to the house is through a 30 ft. tiled hallway that leads to a grand period staircase with twisted balustrades and hand-carved details.

Stepping upstairs into the main reception room feels like travelling back in time to the Stuart period. The room’s dark wooden flooring, large sash windows and working fireplace haven’t changed since the early 1700s, but the space has been updated with soft purple finishes and modern lighting that gives it a distinctly contemporary look.

Double doors take you through to a dining room with another fireplace and a wall of integrated bookcases that give a nod to the literary pedigree of the Bloomsbury area. The kitchen, fitted with modern appliances and marble countertops, is next door and links through to the dining room, making it the perfect layout for hosting dinner parties.

On the second floor, the principal bedroom suite features wood-panelled walls, period cornicing and a brick-lined fireplace that gives the space an intimate feel. A second adjacent bedroom could be used as a dressing room and provides two sets of fitted wardrobes and an ensuite bathroom with maroon tiling and a large walk-in shower. Upstairs, there’s another family bathroom and two further bedrooms, one of which could be transformed into a spacious home office.

The cobblestone lanes of Lamb's Conduit Street lie right in the heart of Bloomsbury which is known for its cultural heritage and association with the ‘Bloomsbury set’ - a group of intellectuals and artists, such as Virginia Woolf and E.M Forster, who lived in the area in the first half of the 20th century.

Despite its central location, Bloomsbury has a village feel with lots of independent coffee shops, eateries and second-hand bookstores. Situated between King’s Cross, Clerkenwell, Holborn and Fitzrovia, the property is within walking distance of much of central London. Russell Square and Euston Square tube stations are also nearby for those working in the City.

Michael Keating, Director of Dexters Bloomsbury says: “Lamb’s Conduit Street makes a wonderful home address, well-positioned for enjoying all the local amenities that Bloomsbury has to offer. We are delighted to be representing this elegant home. It has scope for a buyer to modernise it, but maintains a truly enduring charm.”
