Nina Campbell is one of Britain’s best-known designers with a reputation for creating quintessentially English interiors with a focus on colour, comfort and impeccable use of detail. Now, an apartment she designed on Draycott Place is on the market with Dexters for £1,850,000. It features several of her signature motifs including patterned wallpaper, vibrant colours and luxurious finishes.
Campbell, whose clients include Rod Stewart, the Duke and Duchess of York and Ringo Starr, redesigned Draycott Place shortly before new owners Suki and Mark bought the property in 2014. ‘It’s definitely been well thought out in terms of the space’ says Suki. ‘Originally, the apartment was a one-bedroom flat but Nina redesigned it to fit two double bedrooms. The whole place has a really lovely flow’.
Set on the fourth floor, the entrance hall leads into an open plan living and dining area set around an original Victorian fireplace. A large window supplies the room with plenty of light and Nina’s choice of wall colour helps the space feel warm and inviting. ‘The living area is all painted with a soft taupe paint,’ says Suki. ‘The colour of the wall and the skirting are the same, which enhances the size of the room. The slightly dark hue of the walls also brings out the colour of the furniture. It’s really cleverly done.’
Campbell is recognised for the elegance and ease of her style, often adhering to a single colour palette to draw her designs together. In the master bedroom, she chose predominantly neutral colours and added visual interest by using woven fabric trim along all the edges of the room. In the second bedroom, she picked blue fabric wallpaper to give the space texture and painted the fireplace teal to create a bold style impact.
One part of the house that Suki is particularly fond of is the terrace. Accessed via a cast-iron spiral staircase and an electric roof door, the outdoor area has integrated wooden seating and offers fantastic views of Chelsea. ‘It’s become a tradition to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks from the roof’ says Suki. ‘You can see Royal Albert Hall, Harrods and the Shard’.
Draycott Place runs parallel to Kings Road and lies within walking distance of Sloane Square and South Kensington Tube Stations.
