A rare surviving example of an Arts & Crafts style house is now available on one of Hampton’s most coveted streets. With five bedrooms and the potential to add an extension, it would make an ideal family home
Arts & Crafts houses are easily recognisable thanks to their asymmetrical roofs, gables and distinctive form and structure. The style originated in England in the 1880s and rejected the mass production of Victorian design in favour of traditional craftsmanship and simple, honest construction. Famous proponents of the movement included writer and philosopher John Ruskin as well as British textile designer William Morris.
While the original Arts & Crafts movement only spanned around 30 years, the design and build of these homes has led to their enduring popularity. Typically combining the charm of a traditional cottage with the size and proportions of a more generous property, they provide homeowners with space and adaptability as well as comfort and character.
Wensleydale Road is located on an extensive plot of land at the end of a private driveway. The pale blue house has a large, sloping roof and intricate brickwork around its doorways and windows that demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship. Stained glass panels, a motif of Arts & Crafts design frame the front door whilst inside, the hallway has white panelled ceilings and parquet floors edged in black and gold.
On the lower ground floor, there’s a garage as well as three reception rooms and an open plan kitchen and dining area. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining and living area flood the space with natural light while the kitchen has two large windows overlooking a spectacular landscaped garden lined with trees and shrubs to provide privacy.
It’s rare to find an Arts & Crafts-style home without a porch and Wensleydale Road has a tiered brick terrace at the back of the house that extends the length of the property. There’s plenty of space for an outdoor dining table, and a set of table and chairs under a small entwined tree offers the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee.
Anne-Marie Desboroguh, Director of Dexters Hampton says, ‘Homes built in this style are always scarce and the chance to buy them comes along once in a blue moon. Moments from Carlisle Park and a short walk to Hampton station, this property has lots of character and is nearby some of Hampton’s best schools such as Hampton Court House School.’
