The Old Post Office

A charming property overlooking Victoria Park

Victoria Park is sometimes referred to as London’s leafy hidden secret. An oasis of green in the heart of Hackney, the area is bounded by canals and colourful houseboats that provide a real community feel.

After winning a National Lottery Grant in 2010, Victoria Park itself underwent a £12 million refurbishment project in time for the Olympics. Known to locals as ‘Vicky Park’, its boating lakes and fountains were completely restored. A new cafe, children's play area and activity centre were also opened on its grounds. Today, the park is popular with young professionals and families thanks to its green spaces, regular music concerts and open air festivals.

Just next door, Victoria Park Village has become an equally trendy destination for shopping and eating due to its boutiques, cosy pubs and friendly cafes. Lots of families are drawn to the area because of the great schools, such as Cardinal Pole Catholic School and Mossbourne Parkside Academy, as well as its large Victorian houses.

Although Hackney has experienced lots of changes over the years, one property that’s stood the test of time is the old Post and Telegraph office in Cadogan Terrace. Constructed in the 1860s, this former east London shop is now a fully renovated four storey house. The exterior of the home still has its original sign, as well as the old shop front window and bright red front door.

As you enter, you’ll find a colourful reception room with red walls, and a floor-to-ceiling window that overlooks Victoria Park. This leads to the dining room, which has high ceilings and a long skylight, and then into the open plan kitchen which features wooden integrated cabinets and access to the rear garden patio.

One floor up, there’s a second living room decorated with light pink walls and blue rugs. This level has a large outdoor terrace that’s currently lined with potted plants and could accommodate a coffee table and set of chairs.

The home’s three bedrooms are spread over the two top storeys, and the principal bedroom suite on the second floor has its own en suite bathroom and bathtub.

Jodie Ryan, Director of Dexters Hackney says ‘this unique house is a living piece of London’s history. Cosy and inviting, it would make a fantastic family home and has the added benefit of being positioned opposite Victoria Park and less than half a mile from Hackney Wick Station.’
