Romeo returns to the Royal Opera House

Felix Brown & Alex Broderick's Hampstead

The picturesque village of Hampstead is one of the capital's most elegant super-prime addresses. Its understated nature is why so many affluent Londoners are flocking to this leafy suburb with the combined feel of country and city living.

Finish this sentence: you know you’re in Hampstead when…?

Alex: The local eateries are full of A-list celebrities casually going about their day and the 750 acres of lush green space across Hampstead Heath are never more than 10 minutes walk away.

What do you love most about the area?

Felix: Being the highest point in central London, Hampstead has some of the cleanest air in the capital. The High Street offers a truly eclectic mix of shops and restaurants and is a significant draw for locals. There are always new properties to discover amongst the pretty cobbled streets

What are the most popular roads in your area?

Felix: Hampstead has a wonderful mix of architectural styles from Georgian cottages right through to ambassadorial style houses. Some of the most popular streets in the heart of the village are Downshire Hill and Flask Walk where we recently sold a well-designed terrace house that attracted a lot of press attention. Templewood Avenue and Greenaway Gardens offer outstanding family homes and are rarely available.

Who are the typical buyers and tenants in Hampstead?

Felix: Hampstead has a high proportion of wealthy occupants, many from the city and the legal profession as well as the media. There is a rich mix of "Old Hampstodians" as well as new families coming to the area.

Alex: It is very much a family orientated area due to the schools and the heath but more and more younger people are looking to find a home here. Many of our landlords request our fully managed service to maintain the integrity of their home, and our property managers are never more than 15 minutes away.

What are some of the changes you’ve witnessed here over the years?

Alex: With everything developing around it, Hampstead has retained its unique identity. It’s a beautiful and historic part of London that hasn’t changed much in the last 200 years, which is what makes it so iconic and a huge draw for professionals and families alike. There is limited opportunity for new housing and in turn, keeps the properties at such a premium price.

If there’s one piece of advice you'd give buyers and tenants in Hampstead it would be?

Felix:The market is extremely buoyant and there is renewed demand from international investors. Do your homework, have your mortgage broker and solicitor pre-instructed and be ready to pounce! The market for the best properties tends to move very quickly indeed and if buyers are not prepared there is a very strong chance of them missing out.

Alex:The appetite for properties at the top end of the market remains strong due to the shortage of availability. Many of our tenants, particularly families looking for long term contracts, come to us through our Corporate Lettings and International Relocation team who receive hundreds of enquiries every week. Using an experienced local expert is very important as many of the super prime properties are ‘quietly available’.
