Visiting a spa is a wonderful treat, but now you can have that experience every day in your very own spathroom. The word describes spaces that have been elevated beyond the usual bathroom to encompass all the facilities of a spa in the comfort of your home.
Liz Beale, design associate at Goddard Littlefair says, “In today’s hyper-connected world we are increasingly seeking sanctuary within our homes. Bathrooms represent a prime opportunity for relaxation and self-care. This shift reflects a growing emphasis on wellness and mindfulness, with individuals prioritising spaces that promote physical and mental rejuvenation.”
Collaborating with a design team will ensure that every aspect of your spathroom project is meticulously planned and executed. They will consider functionality, as well as aesthetics, to create the most sustainable and timeless room. Your plan could encompass facilities such as a whirlpool bath, bio-sauna, and steam room, not to mention a state-of-the-art shower with all manner of effects.
Water wellness
Joel Fry, a designer at West One Bathrooms says, “Water therapy has many benefits. This can include angling water jets to hit certain parts of the body and fluctuating temperatures to improve blood circulation.” Joel continues, “An Axor modular control, for example, allows you to change from rain shower to hand shower to waterfall at the click of a button. Adding a sun shower with UV and infrared lighting can also be beneficial. This wellness technique not only boosts vitamin D but also heats the body, which can reduce muscle tension.”
Relaxation zones featuring lighting that changes colour to suit your mood and soundscapes to help you unwind are key to the spa experience and can be replicated at home. Interior designer, René Dekker says, “While you are relaxing in the bath, you can be accompanied by the gentle sounds of forest life or your favourite aria.”
Decadent design
Your sanctuary should have high-end finishes and Liz believes that natural elements create a serene ambiance. “Opting for earthy tones like soft neutrals, muted greens, and calming accent colours evoke a sense of harmony and balance. Incorporating materials such as natural stone, warm woods, and tactile textures further enhances the organic feel.”
In the spathroom there is the potential to create something extra special and completely unique. Decadent, freestanding baths in silver or copper, oversized double sinks and elaborate chandeliers all have a place. A connection to nature via aview from the window, an outdoor terrace or even a gentle water feature will add to the luxe feel.
Show-stopping shapes
Symmetry is important in the creation of a sensual space. A talented designer will take time to understand your room and ensure just the right balance of practicality, comfort and beauty. René says, “Softness can be introduced with the use of shape, such as the gentle oval of a bath rim or perfect circles in a cluster of mirrors. Shelving units should display items to tantalise the senses, such as perfumed candles.”
Whether you like a blissful bath, a sauna and steam, or a calming space for self-care, a thoughtfully designed spathroom will bring luxury and wellness to your daily life and also add to the long-term value of your property.
